In-Roof Solar Panels in West Malling, Kent (ME19)
Recently, the Sunbright Energy team completed a large-scale solar and battery installation for a homeowner in Birling, near West Malling (ME19).
What made this project particularly interesting wasn’t just the size of the system, but the installation method itself. Rather than using a traditional on-roof mounting system, this project utilised a GSE In-Roof solar system, creating a sleek, integrated finish that blends seamlessly into the roofline.
Combined with 46.1kWh of battery storage and a high-performance solar array, the result is a system designed to significantly reduce grid reliance while maintaining the appearance of the property.
In this case study, we’ll take a closer look at the system design, expected performance, and the long-term savings this homeowner can expect.

This system was specifically designed for a homeowner with above-average electricity usage who wanted to maximise self-consumption and minimise their reliance on imported grid electricity.
Why This Installation in West Malling Was Different
One of the standout features of this project was the use of a GSE In-Roof mounting system.
Unlike conventional solar installations, where panels are mounted above existing roof tiles, an in-roof system integrates the solar panels directly into the roof structure itself.
The result is a much cleaner and more premium-looking finish.
From street level, the panels sit flush with the roof rather than protruding above it, creating a modern appearance that many homeowners prefer.
For homeowners who place a high value on aesthetics, in-roof systems can be an excellent option.
An Added Benefit: No Need for Bird Protection
One often overlooked advantage of an in-roof system is bird prevention.
With traditional on-roof systems, there is typically a gap beneath the panels that can attract birds looking to nest.
This often results in homeowners installing bird protection mesh after their solar installation.
Because the GSE system integrates directly into the roof structure, there is no cavity beneath the panels for birds to access.
This eliminates a common maintenance issue while also removing the need for additional bird protection measures.
Designing a System for High Energy Usage
This property consumes approximately 15,000kWh of electricity per year, which is significantly higher than the average UK household.
For a property with this level of demand, simply installing solar panels would not have been enough to maximise savings.
Instead, the system was designed around three key objectives:
- Maximise on-site energy generation
- Store as much excess energy as possible
- Reduce reliance on expensive peak-rate electricity
To achieve this, the homeowner opted for both a large solar array and substantial battery storage capacity.
The Solar & Battery System in West Malling
19 Aiko Neostar All-Black Solar Panels
The system features 19 Aiko Neostar 2S 465W All Black ABC N-Type Mono panels, providing a total array size of 8.835kW.
Aiko panels are widely regarded as some of the highest-performing residential solar panels currently available, offering excellent efficiency and strong low-light performance.
The all-black design also complements the sleek appearance of the GSE in-roof system, helping maintain a clean, uniform roof finish.
Together, the array is expected to generate approximately 8,074kWh of clean electricity every year.
Fox ESS KH 10kW Hybrid Inverter
At the heart of the system is a Fox ESS KH 10kW Hybrid Inverter.
The inverter is responsible for converting the DC electricity generated by the solar panels into usable AC electricity for the home while also managing battery charging and discharge.
By using a hybrid inverter, the system can intelligently manage energy flows between the solar array, battery storage, property consumption, and the grid.
46.1kWh of Battery Storage
Perhaps the most impressive element of this installation is the battery storage capacity.
The homeowner chose four Fox ESS EP12 batteries, providing a combined storage capacity of 46.1kWh.
This level of storage is substantial for a residential property and allows the homeowner to:
- Store excess solar generation during the day
- Use stored energy overnight
- Charge batteries during cheaper off-peak periods
- Reduce reliance on expensive daytime electricity
The large battery capacity was selected specifically to complement the property’s higher-than-average energy demand.
At Sunbright Energy, Fox ESS are always our solar battery and inverter partner of choice due to their high efficiency, cost effectiveness, and reliability. We’re also the only Fox ESS Approved Installer in Kent.
Projected Energy Bill Savings
One of the primary reasons homeowners invest in solar and battery storage is to reduce rising electricity costs.
Before installation, this property’s annual electricity costs were estimated at approximately £4,725 per year.
Following the installation, those costs are projected to fall to around £1,923 per year.
That’s an estimated saving of:
£2,802 per year
simply through solar generation and battery storage.
Additional Savings Through Smart Battery Management
Because the homeowner has such a large battery storage system, there is an opportunity to further reduce costs through energy tariff optimisation.
By charging the batteries overnight using lower-cost electricity and using that energy during higher-cost periods, additional savings become possible.
Based on the projected usage profile, the system could generate:
Up to £1,458 in additional annual savings
through intelligent battery charging and discharging strategies.
When these savings are combined with solar generation and export income, the effective annual electricity cost could fall to as little as:
£376 per year
This demonstrates how battery storage is becoming increasingly important as energy tariffs evolve.
Solar savings are different for every property, as each building has its own unique design, structure and energy needs.

Environmental Impact
The benefits of this installation extend beyond financial savings.
The system is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately:
1,657kg of CO₂ every year
To put that into perspective, that’s equivalent to:
- Driving approximately 5,918 fewer miles in a typical car
- The annual carbon absorption of around 76 trees
For homeowners looking to reduce both their energy bills and environmental impact, solar and battery storage can make a meaningful difference.
Long-Term Return on Investment
While annual savings are important, solar should always be viewed as a long-term investment.
Over the system’s projected 25-year lifespan, we estimate:
Total Energy Bill Savings
£126,282
Estimated Net Financial Benefit
£95,405
after accounting for the initial installation cost.
For many homeowners, this combination of lower bills, protection from future energy price increases, and long-term financial returns makes solar one of the most attractive home improvements available.

Thinking About an In-Roof Solar System?
This project is a great example of how solar technology can be tailored to suit both a property’s appearance and its energy requirements.
The GSE In-Roof system provided a clean, integrated finish while eliminating the need for bird protection. Combined with high-efficiency solar panels and substantial battery storage, the homeowner now has a system capable of dramatically reducing their reliance on grid electricity.
While in-roof systems are not the right choice for every property, they can be an excellent option for homeowners prioritising aesthetics, roof integration, and a premium finish.

What is a GSE in-roof solar system?
A GSE in-roof system integrates solar panels directly into the roof structure rather than mounting them above existing roof tiles, creating a cleaner and more streamlined appearance.
Are in-roof solar panels better than on-roof solar panels?
Neither option is universally better. In-roof systems offer improved aesthetics and eliminate the need for bird protection, while traditional on-roof systems can sometimes be more cost-effective.
Do GSE in-roof systems need bird protection?
No. Because the panels are integrated into the roof structure, there is no cavity beneath them for birds to access and nest.
How much battery storage does a typical home need?
This depends on your energy usage. Many homes install between 5kWh and 15kWh of storage, while higher-usage properties may benefit from larger systems such as the 46.1kWh installation featured in this project in West Malling, Kent.
How much can solar panels save on electricity bills in Kent?
Savings vary depending on energy usage, system size, battery storage, and tariff selection. However, many homeowners can significantly reduce their electricity bills by combining solar panels with battery storage.
